Plantar Fasciitis.: Heel pain early in the am especially with the first step is often plantar fasciitis. This is treated with good shoes, an arch support, and physical therapy.

Home therapy: Agree with dr. Fisher, but there are things you can do to ease discomfort: use NSAID (advil/ motrin/aleve) for pain & inflammation; freeze water in plastic bottle & roll it with arch of foot for pain relief & fascial stretching; hook towel over toes & gently pull towards body to stretch fascia; drop hand towel on floor & pull it towards you using only toes (stretches fascia).

Plantar fascitiis: Likely. Massage the heel before getting out of bed, wear an arch support while walking. Ice the arch and heel when possible. Night splints are helpful to get rid of that morning pain. Antiinflammatories like alleve can help. When all fail, see podiatrist.

Additional treatment: Includes antiinflammatory medication, sometimes cortisone injections, night splints and laser therapy. For difficult cases shockwave treatment and others can also help a great deal.

May be heel spurs: One of the most common causes of heel pain is from heel spurs or bursitis of heel and arch. Pain upon bearing weight after periods of rest is an especially common symptom. Usually there is a biomechanical cause due to a lack of adequate foot support or shoes. More supportive shoes or orthotics are often helpful long term. Short term help may be provided by rest, heat or ice. See podiatrist.

Plantar fasciitis: Here is the straight up answer. Stretch your calves 3 min. 3 times everyday and you will get over it. Everything else you try might make it feel better, but when it comes to correcting the cause, your tight calves, all else is just busy work and expensive. Stretch your calves, save your feet.
