A 40-year-old female asked:

what could clear tissue in urine mean? 74 yr old with one kidney removed due to cancer as well as bladder infections.

Not sure what: Clear tissue may mean, but it is time to get a urne analysis and some blood work, and then decision about imaging or cystoscopy. You did not say if it was the kidney, its pelvis or ureter that was cancer. I would definitely call or visit your urologist.

A 45-year-old member asked:

Can women go on birth control even though their mother has had breast cancer?

Dr. Barry Rosen
General Surgery 34 years experience
Yes: Bcp use is not associated with any significant incidence of breast cancer regardless of risk factors, however, certain breast cancers can grow in response to estrogen use. It is advised to begin cancer screening 10 years before your mother was first diagnosed with breast cancer. This should include yearly physician exam and mammography, ultrasound, and/or mri, depending on age and risk factors.

Notify Pediatrician: May try nasal saline solution to clean the nasal passages and make him/ her breath humidified air. Avoid aspirin. Notify the pediatrician office so he/ she be examined. If bleeding is too much take him to the emergency room.

Unlikley: Too many symptoms... Neck and back pain - highly unlikely to be anything serious and certainly not a common symptom of thyroid cancer. Cough?... Could be anything - viral respiratory infection/allergies. Lumps: anything larger than 2cm or presence for more than 2 weeks should be checked - see your local ent.

A member asked:

My brother has a pe and a mass on lung with thyroid nodules. Never smoked. He is hospital 5 days INR still 1.1. Cat scan says possiable cancer. How will we know for sure ?

Biopsy when stable: The current studies suggest that there may be a cancer. The source could be the lung or thyroid. This could also be benign, but with the pe it will need further workup. After the pe is stabilized a biopsy is the only way to know.
