Usually low in iron: People with hemochromatosis usually want a diet that is low in iron. A primary care doctor, a gastroenterologist, or a hepatologist can help one decide how much iron she can safely eat. Avoiding iron means avoiding red meat. Red meat contains heme iron, which a person's body easily absorbs. Fish and chicken are better choices (and are even healthier if the skin and fat are removed).
