Yes but...: There have been no solid evidence that "monitor" reduced the incidence of sids. Monitor use should be limited to preemies who experienced apneic spells, sibling of sids victim, or infants who had an alte (apparent life threatening event).

Nope: Monitors have not been proven to reduce the risk of sids whatsoever. Breastfeed your baby, don't smoke. Put the baby down on his back in his own crib, with a standard mattress, no fluffy stuff, without a hat in a cool room, 68 degrees rather than 72. SIDS is luckily rare, one in 2,000 births. Latest thinking is that a brainstem abnormality reduces a breathing recovery when more oxygen is needed
