Earache: Any of the analgesics (acetaminophen, Ibuprofen or naproxen) can be taken orally. Your doctor can prescribe ear drops for pain. Warm commpress to the outer ear may help too.

Yes: To have pain with an ear infection the infected material must build up pressure on the ear drum causing it to stretch or cause direct irritation to the drum itself. Some kids or adults will have an infection that doesn't do either.
