A member asked:

A patient has a pulse of 75 bpm, an end-systolic volume of 120ml & and end-diastolic volume of 135ml. what would this suggest?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Sick!: Pulse of 75 is normal. End diastolic volume (edv) of 135 is about normal but the end systolic volume (esv) of 120 is high. This means that with every hear beat 15 cc gets put out (edv-esv), which is stroke volume (sv). Cardiac output is normally 4-5 l/min & this person is only 1.125 (svxhr), which is exceedingly low.
