A member asked:

At what point erythropoitin supplementation given to patients deficient of erythropoitin?what are the side effects?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Depends.: For dialysis pts - if symptomatic as a result of anemia it may be reasonable to use EPO at a HGB of 11 g/dl. Otherwise 10 is the standard. For other diseases anemia associated with EPO levels in the 100-500 range is typically the trigger. Side effects are headache, hypertension and influenza like syndrome. In cancer patients there is a risk of blood clots.
