A member asked:

Side effects of vitamin d deficiency - are any symptoms obvious to a patient?

Often not: Because vitamin d deficiency develops gradually, a patient may not notice symptoms or attribute them to getting older. Fatigue and generalized achiness may occur. Sometimes the only way to know is to take vitamind until levels become normal and see what gets better.

Ricketts: Vitamin d is important for maintaining normal body calcium and phosphate metabolism. Deficiency disease is called ricketts. Most people have enough dietary calcium. Time in sunlight is also important to activate the vitamin in the skin. There is also "vitamin-d resistant" ricketts, a range of diseases due to inborn errors of metabolism. Bone pain, deformity, bowed legs, cramps are symptoms.
