Former an emergency!: Both reflect a state of high thyroid hormone levels, however, the former is considered an emergency with life threatning systemic changes namely altered mental state, agitation and sometimes fever. It typically results from untreated hyperthyroidism and is usually brought on by a stress such as trauma or infection.
