Asymmetry: I have rarely performed augmentation of an underdeveloped breast in patients with gross asymmetry where the other breast is normally sized and can be well-matched with an implant, but this is very uncommon. Of course, breast enlargement also occurs with reconstruction after mastectomy.

Cosmetic not functio: The term breast enlargement usually refers to an elective cosmetic procedure and therefore it is never needed but it is frequently desired for underdeveloped or asymmetric breasts. In some instances of congenital breast deformity or mastectomy or trauma, a breast can be enlarged but then is is termed: "breast reconstruction".
