How effective is reconstructive surgery after a double mastectomy?

Compared to????: The most important measure of effectiveness of this operation is comparing the results to a woman who has had a double mastectomy without reconstruction, rather than comparing "before and after". Variables that effect outcome include the method of reconstruction, method of mastectomy (mod-rad, skin-sparing, nipple-areolar sparing), and health & body of the woman. Overall, it is very effective.

Often very effective: There are many choices available now for women who opt for reconstruction and it is important to seek the opinion of a plastic surgeon with experience in this area. The results will depend on many factors including whether or not you are a smoker and if you receive chemotherapy or radiation therapy. It is important to be realistic - it is not just the same as getting breast implants.
