Rest and rehab: See an orthopedic surgeon if your primary care md is uncomfortable with diagnosing and managing the injury. Usually a sprained knee ligament is managed for 2-6 weeks with bracing, physical therapy modalities, ice and anti-inflammatories, followed by gradual return to activity. More extensive tears result in chronic pain and instability and might require surgery.
