Common sense should: Rule. Patient's tolerate different food items. Stay away from dairy or spicy foods until you know what your friend can tolerate. Then you can feel free to work with him or her so they are comfortable. One interesting diet is the specific carbohydrate diet. If you look it up online you may find there have been some good results in patients with crohns.

Ask your friend: If your friend is coming to dinner, just ask what he/she needs by way of food, but don't make it a big deal in front of other people. Let your friend pick out what he/she wants, and keep the conversation away from the crohn's disease topic. Soft, non-spicy foods are always best. Cooked veggies, mashed potatoes, rice, fairly plain chicken are always good bets.
