Unknown: Mostly unknown but some genetic link is suspected in some patients. It can be associated with iron deficiency, renal failure etc.

Multifactorial: Many people have it, mostly unknown causes. It can result from medication side effects, benzodiazepine withdrawal, medical conditions such as parkinson's. Anything causing sleep disorders (stress, caffeine, nicotine, drug use, shift work etc) can bring on or worsen plmd.
