Does NOT matter: For cardiovascular fitness, she needs to reach and maintain a target heart of 50 to 75% of maximum heart rate. At 50 yo, her target hr is 170 and 50 to 75% is 85 to 135 beats per minute. Any exercise that uses the large muscles to stimulate this target hr is ok. If walking does not hurt her back and she can walk "hard" enough, it would great. Good luck!

Walking post surgery: Your mother in law should talk with her back surgeon to discuss her activity. The surgeon knows what the situation is with her back and will advise her accordingly.

Enough: She should do a hard walk (that she feels snd is increasing her heart rate) until she starts toi feel tired remember that you have to walk back as well but moderate exercise is one of the best things you can do for yourself.
