How can you know if you have a 'heavy flow' during periods?

By symptoms: Average amount of blood loss during a single menstrual period is 35 ml. If you are passing clots, it is likely that your blood loss is excessive. If it lasts long or forcing you to change more often than 3 times a day may be indicative of excess blood loss. Also, anemia or fatigue may be caused by heavy blood loss.
