Atarax (hydroxyzine).: Hydroxyzine is a fairly safe, non-habit forming, med. In addition to being used for itching and insomnia, it has an indication for anxiety in doses up to 600 mg a day. As such if you are not combining it with other meds and the doses are reasonable, it is likely safe. Still you always want to let your doctor know so that your anxiety can be evaluated and treated ideally and safely.

No.: It is not the most effective medication for anxiety, but it is among the safest, with very few side effects. You should, however, try to take it on an as-needed basis, rather than routinely, and keep the dose low, preferably 75mg per day at most. Above all, you should see a doctor, preferably a psychiatrist, to discuss ways of preventing the need for hydroxyzine.
