Not necessary.: Pelvic examination is not required at your 38-week prenatal care visit. Membrane stripping is a technique commonly used by midwives to help stimulate contractions by releasing prostaglandins in the cervix. It is not necessary and may not even be advisable if you are gbs+. Certainly, if it is too painful you should refuse it altogether.
