Infection: Peritonitis is an internal infection inside the abdomen. It can come from may factors such as intestinal perforation (primary peritonitis), or infection of pre-existing ascites fluid (secondary peritonitis). It is often a serious condition needing intravenous antibiotics and surgery if the peritonitis is from an intestinal perforation.
