A member asked:

Do antihistamines actually improve allergic conditionsor just suppress symptoms?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Antihistamines block: Antihistamines block the receptor sites for histamine released from mast cells or basophils in allergic reactions. As such they suppress symptoms to a variable amount. The only present treatment that can actually alter the allergic condition (diathesis) is immunotherapy (allergy injections).
