Yes, but rarely: Blood clots in the leg can happen after any trauma to the lower extremity or even after elective surgery. It is caused by blood vessel injury, swelling in the leg, and inactivity resulting in decreased contraction of muscles in the calf. It can be prevented by doing elevation of the leg, light compressive wrap or stockings, ankle and knee range of motion exercises and anticoagulant medications.
