Dr. James Fox answered

Intolerance to Meds: Ect is a safe and very effective treatment for depression. Rates of major depressive disorder are about the same in the elderly as the rates in younger adults, but the elderly are much more prone to intolerable side effects from medications. Ect is safe but not without risks.

ECT: Ect is one of the most safe and effective treatments for depression in the elderly. It is used and should be used if other treatment options fail. Its works quickly and effectively with minimal side effects, and does not cause permanent brain damage.
