Fast and inexpensive: A ct of the head is extremely quick (less than a minute) and can rule out fracture, bleeding, and many other serious conditions. It is not as sensitive to pathology as an MRI (especially in the soft tissue), and does involve exposure to x-rays.

Depends on necessity: A ct scan is very good for examining hard tissue. An MRI shows softer tissue. The amount of radiaion with the newer machines is very low and very seldom is problematic unless the patient has already been exposed to a lot of radiation.
