A member asked:

Do they give chemotherapy for aplastic anemia?

Not usually: Aplastic anemia is bone marrow failure and is most often caused by an immune process. The treatment is atg and Cyclosporine which impact on the immune system. One problem is that some forms of myleodysplasia can be mistaken for aplastic anemia and those are treated with different drugs. Some of those drugs in different doses were used as chemotherapy.

Thank

For BMT...: Chemotherapy is given to ablate the bone marrow when you treat aplastic anemia with a bone marrow transplant. Otherwise, immunosuppressive medications are the standard of care for treatment.
