Depends on Severity: If severe developmental disorders can be diagnosed in preschool aged children, and younger if the issues are of a profound nature. Milder or more subtle problems are usually diagnosed in elementary school.

Before birth: Some genetic syndromes and congenital anomalies associated with developmental delays are diagnosed prenatally. Once born, any infant can be referred for evaluation of eligibility for early intervention under the federal law idea, individuals with disabilities education act or for private evaluations and therapy, if needed.Early intervention can make a real difference for infants and their families.
