TMJ: Sometimes the most effective solution is the simplest. A dentist can evaluate if your bite is off (teeth not hitting balanced on both sides). A occlusal equilibration can be done(slightly reshaping the teeth) or a TMJ splint can be fabricated(clear acrylic appliance horseshoe shaped covering the top or bottom teeth. Discuss the advantages of both with your dentist. Physical therapy/muscle relaxer.

Bite plate: You need an evaluation. It needs to be seen if there are mechanical reasons, if the jaw joint does not fit, if you're under a lot of stress, if there are other clinical issues involved. Each of these need to be evaluated and treated accordingly.

Evaluation Needed: At home you can do otc anti-inflammatories such as Ibuprofen or advil (ibuprofen). Soft diet and physical therapy are also some things you can do at home. Heating pad or ice is also options. You should go to the doctors to get evaluated and get a definitive diagnosis and treatment plan.

A few things: Depends on symptoms, and cause of symptoms. 3 signs of TMJ dysfunction: joint noises, joint pain & limited oral opening. Self treat with soft diet, jaw exercises, massage, heat/cold, OTC pain meds. A splint or physical therapy would be next. Occasionally muscle relaxants, biofeedback. Xrays are done for diagnosis. Surgery usually reserved for serious symptoms not responsive to other treatments.
