Saliva, sex: EBV is transmitted by saliva and genital fluids. In young kids, infectious mononucleosis (mono, the most common EBV illness) generally is from contact with other kids' saliva. In teens and young adults, mono has been called "kissing disease) because of saliva, but usually is sexually transmitted. Sexually active persons with mono need testing for other STDs (chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, HIV).
