Quite common: The cord wrapping around the baby's neck is quite common, noted 30% of the time when the baby is born. It has no clinical significance and there is no real need to check for it before birth.

No: Although the scenario sounds scary, it is actually fairly common to find a "nuchal cord, " an umbilical cord wrapped around the neck, as well as a shoulder, or even leg. The umbilical cord is designed to handle tightening and stretching, because it contains a gelatinous substance within the cord called "wharton's jelly" -- a natural shock absorber!
A 44-year-old member asked:

I keep seeing jagged flashes of lightning bolts that shimmer around an object followed by an intense headache. Are these hallucinations?

No: These are not hallucinations and you need to be seen by a doctor. Seeing lightning bolts can mean there is eye problem like a torn retina or neurologic problem like a migraine. If you are pregnant, visual changes associated with a headache can indicate a serious complication called pre eclampsia. If you have these symptoms it is very important you see a doctor for further evaluation.

How can I relieve a headache without meds?

Depends on cause: Without a proper diagnosis, there's no way to know the cause or proper treatment. For simple, non-recurrent ha's, might try ice to head or neck, sleep, massage, meditation. A good hands-on osteopathic exam, whether pain is short-term or chronic, might find a mechanical cause - often from neck pain/dysf, rib problems, even sacral problems which can be treated with manipulation. Just some suggestions.
