Nonspecific: The symptoms are generally myalgias, fever, chills, cough, and confusion, which can be present in nearly any systemic viral infection, and can present as a severe case of influenza. Contact with an infected person or travel to an endemic area would be needed to raise suspicion of this disease in the US.

Respiratory symptoms: In general, severe acute respiratory syndrome (sars), begins with a high fever (temp >100.4°f [>38.0°c]). Other symptoms may include headache, an overall feeling of discomfort, and body aches. Some people also have mild respiratory symptoms at the outset. About 10-20% of patients have diarrhea. After 2 to 7 days, sars patients may develop a dry cough. Most patients develop pneumonia.
