How often is a retainer worn after braces come off?

OFTEN!: I know it is painful, ugly and stinky.I wore one.But the end-result is probably worth it.

Retainer wear: It depends on the type of treatment offered and how much your teeth moved when they were straightened. If your teeth were really crowded or spaced you will need to wear it more often. If the teeth were only slightly crooked or spaced then less often. A safe estimate would be 4 hours during the day and all night for a few months then night time only therafter but discuss this with your orthodontist.

@ intervals forever: Each case has a "sweet spot" for time in retainers. The interval between and hours worn may differ, but all are for lifetime.
