A member asked:

Is it possible to get a virus strep throat when you have a bacteria strep throat?

Yes: On occasion, strep coexists with a viral infection. Thus the antibiotic may appear not to make you better, since it does not work for the viral illness. In these cases whether the strep is an active infection or present in a " carrier" or passive state is not clear.

Definitions: "strep" throat is always bacterial because that term refers to the bacterium streptococcus pneumoniae. Everything else is a sore throat but is not 'strep'. Yes, you can have viral and bacterial in the throat at the same time but, this is not very common.
