How much, how often?: Alcohol in low doses (1 drink/ day) may in some people delay the process of atherosclerosis. Anything more (2 drinks+/day) will have a net negative effect and can lead to multiple health problems including atherosclerosis. Alcohol metabolism leads to free radicals which interfere with protective mechanisms and stimulates inflammatory processes like atherosclerosis -- "clogged arteries" may result.
