Use despite problems: Basically the diagnosis of substance abuse or substance dependence depends on a pattern of continued use despite evidence that using that substance has caused or might cause serious health, social, psychological, work or legal problems.

Hmmm: Why does she think you need substance abuse treatment? Do you have problems with alcohol or drug abuse? Have you been asked by a doctor or family member to curtail your drug/alcohol use? Have you had dui's? Is there a problem with keeping a job or managing finances? Are there problems with the marriage or physical abuse?

No: I'm not aware of any data on this, but in general individuals with ASD are less likely to be risk-takers, more likely to be under the watchful eye of an adult, and less likely to congregate unsupervised with peers who are experimenting with substances of abuse. Among my fairly substantial patient population, i've not seen any problems, even with marijuana.

People confuse: Love with helping. So a father bails out his son, or a mom pours the alcohol down the drain. And addicts are extremely effective manipulators who get well meaning friends and family members to help them continue to use.
