Multiple reasons: Lactic acid a byproduct of anaerobic metabolism will cause post-exercise inflammation. Hydration and stretching will minimize this effect. Medical attention is needed if pain is severe and chronic. Many other medical conditions need to be ruled out including inflammatory vs. Non-inflammatory types of arthritis. A good neurological workup is also helpful.
