Don't worry: Many babies, even if in the higher growth percentiles as babies, slim down as toddlers as they begin to walk and move around. It is rare for a breastfed baby to become overweight. Formula fed babies may, but just make sure that after about 8 months you limit milk intake to 24 ounces a day. Once they begin eating solids allow them finger foods they can feed themselves, so they will not overeat.

Depends: If a child is < 6 months old, not much, and don't worry. If a child is > 6 months old, make sure the food they're eating is healthy. This means no juices or "junk" food. Also, the earlier a child is introduced to "solid" foods, the more likely he/she is to be overweight. To avoid this, wait until at least 4-6 months old to introduce (soft) cereals and fruits/veggies.

Review growth charts: Even healthy babies can look chubby and be a bit overweight, so a parent who thinks his/her baby is too overweight should review the baby's growth charts with the doctor. The doctor will discuss dietary choices, but babies generally do not need to be put on any weight-loss diet. An overweight baby should "grow into" her current weight as she gets taller, as long as she is not eating excessively.
