Shyness vs disorder: Shyness differs from social anxiety disorder by severity and whether social situations with unfamaliar people produces anxiety. The avoidance impairs the person's ability to function. Generally, those that are shy don't anticipatory anxiety; whereas, those with the disorder do and may worry excessively.There is a fear that they will do or say something that will humiliate or embarrass them.
