What is a chiari-brain malformation?

Small back of skull.: Chiari malformations develop due to a decreased size in the back of the skull. Because there is not enough space for the brain to develop, a part of the brain called the cerebellar tonsils get pushed through through the hole where the spinal cord attaches to the brain. This results in increased pressure and development of "cysts" in the spinal cord. Chiari ii has additional brain&cord changes.

Basic answer: The cerebellum is the rearmost part of the brain structures as it transitions into the spinal cord holding all the nerve tracts. This part of the brain is supposed to stop at the base of the skull, but in some people part of the cerebellum is positioned below the skull, extending between the cord & the upper vertebrae. The Chiari malformation is a broad label covering this defect.
