Saliva: Probably the most common reason for rash around the mouth is what's called "lip licker's dermatitis" -- licking dry lips, which starts a vicious cycle. Some lip balms can create this also. Other possibilities includes cold sores (herpes simplex virus) and cheilitis (healed by an over-the-counter fungal cream).
