Many causes: Wax can certainly cause this problem as can intermittent fluid and eustachian tube dysfunction. Other causes include menieres syndrome and rarely autoimmune disorders.

Hearing problems: Intermittent hearing problems may be caused most often by wax in the ear. However to find out exact cause you may see your ENT doctor.

3 things: There are three entities that quickly come to mind when only intermittent hearing loss are considered. 1.) impacted wax in the ear canal, 2.) middle ear fluid that comes and goes, and 3.) an entity called cochlear hydrops, an early form of Meniere's disease before vertigo and tinnitus occurs.
