What is the most dangerous type of surgery?

Dr. Richard Orr answered

Specializes in Surgical Oncology

Depends: Depends on the specialty and who you ask. In the general surgery field, liver, esophageal, and pancreas surgery have the highest mortality. The patients condition has a huge role to play, however. For example, a strangulated inguinal (groin) hernia in a patient that is on steroids and home oxygen is a very dangerous operation, as opposed to the same opertaion on a healthy person.
