See below please: Cholestasis of pregnancy is a condition in which the normal flow of bile in the gallbladder is affected by the high amounts of pregnancy hormones. Cholestasis is more common in the last trimester of pregnancy. 1-2 pregnancies/1000 are affected by cholestasis. In severe cases, but not all, cholestasis may increase the risks for fetal distress, preterm birth, or stillbirth. Blood tests are key.

Potentially lethal!: Cholestasis gravidarum is a rare condition where placental estrogen stimulates the maternal liver in such a way that bile acids backtrack in the maternal and fetal circulation. This causes itching to the mother and potential for lethal arrhythmias to the fetus. Delivery by 36-38 weeks is a usual approach to avoid fetal death although the evidence is poor. Fetal surveillance twice weekly, ursodiol!
