Biologic system: Warm-blooded creatures must expend energy to maintain their bodies within a small range of temperatures, and are capable of a prolonged exercise. Cold-blooded creatures can tolerate a much greater range of temperatures but at the price of remaining inactive most of the time. The terms are old and simplistic, the biology is complicated and quite deep, but that's the basics.
