What does it mean to have a rectocele prolapse?

Herniation: The rectum is herniating into the floor of the vagina producing a "bulge". It is repaired via surgery and may cause constipation or fecal retention if not treated.

Rectocele: Rectocele is simply the rectum herniating or bulging into the vagina. Common symptoms include a feeling of vaginal fullness and sometimes a feeling of incompletely emptying when defecating. There is little risk to having a rectocele and they are very common in women who have delivered babies vaginally so these need only be treated when they are bothering you. Surgery is vaginal and outpatient.
