A 36-year-old member asked:

how can you check a valproic acid trough?

1 doctor answer1 doctor weighed in

Timing: A valproic acid trough level, which is what should be measured, needs to be drawn ten to twelve hours after the last dose. Btw-the therapeutic range for levels is 50-100 for seizures, but it is 75-125 for mood stabilization. Other labs which should be drawn with the level are a CBC (blood count), and ast/alt (liver enzymes).

Epilim/Isoptin: Combination of Depakote (epilim) & isoptin (verapamil) should pose no dangers if dose is closely monitored by your doctor, due to excess sedation. Both medications can help with migraine headaches as well.

A 19-year-old male asked:

Valproic acid at low doses causing greater mental adverse side effects, and greater physical side effects at higher dosages?

1 doctor answer3 doctors weighed in
Dr. Peter Forster
Psychiatry 36 years experience
Dose related: Both mental and physical side effects with valproic acid are usually dose related (higher the higher the dose). However, you might notice that the effectiveness (reduction in mental symptoms) is also dose related. What you are thinking of as adverse mental side effects might be untreated psychiatric symptoms. Part of what makes psychiatry interesting! :-).
