A member asked:

What are the differences between valproic acid and lithium?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Considerable: Although Depakote and lithium are both prescribed and are effective for the treatment of bipolar d/o, they do differ.Depakote is actually an anticonvulsant medication prescribed for seizures, while lithium is not. The latter is basically a mineral and considered a mood stabilizing medication. Lithium is metabolized through the kidneys, while Depakote is through the liver.
