Laboratory, but: Laboratory determined blood glucose is the best as long as the blood is spun immidiately(separate cell from serum)or is collected in a specil tube where red cells are destroyed, because red cell will continue to break down glucose if not processed immidiately. On the other hand, home blood glucose monitors are also quite reliable specially for day to day decision making.

Instructions: After 10:00 pm the day before do not eat anything but water. Go to the lab and get a fasting blood glucose and a hbga1-c (pharmacies cell a kit) . That will tell you if you are not handeling your sugar properly.
If you see your doctor he can answer all this questions and concerns.

Depends when you ate: Check with your health care provider what your individual goals should be. Usually when you haven't eaten for 6 hours or more the levels should be in the 80-100 range. If you test 1-2 hours after a good sized meal, it would be more like 140-160. This would be for someone with their diabetes under good control.
