Good question: The typhoid bacillus binds to intestinal mucosal sites ordinarily occupied by normal gut bacteria. If these are sensitive to penicillin (or more commonly Ampicillin or amoxicillin) this may lower the number of bacteria necessary to produce typhoid fever, but this is generally not material.
