Desire to quit: Is key; nicotine is the highly addictve product, it should help. It took me 5 times to quit smokes 30 years ago without an aid, cold turkey method, but as twain quipped: "it's easy to quit, i've done it 100 times." the patch is a bridge and a crutch, not a cure.
