Contusions: Are bruises that cause localized capillary destruction. The depth of the bruise and injury determines the trauma and pain associated. The faster and harder the injury, the more pain and swelling. However, a slower, more surface area injury can hurt more over a larger area of skin. Again, it all depends on the type and velocity of injury.
