Why is "ambulance" spelled backwards on front of an ambulance van?

Mirror Reading: If an ambulance comes up behind you on the road, you are able to read the word ambulance in your rear view or side mirrors. This allows you to get out of their way, as sometimes they are transporting a patient and are unable to travel with lights and sirens.
